The ambition of any independent wrestler is to see his name in lights. To transcend the territories and play a leading role on the biggest stage of them all. Don't get me wrong, I love working out of Portland with the Western Wrestling Alliance. But I'm at a point in my career where it's now or never. I need that one last run in the big leagues. It's time to transcend this journeyman status and redefine myself. It all starts this weekend, Redefine 20. As if all the stars have aligned themselves I embark in this new adventure right before a tour of England. Coincidentally also the home of my first opponent, Sophia Wilson. I feel for Sophia. Her name automatically comes with the prefix 'Jon Kellar's niece'. Wherever she goes, no matter what she does, she can't lose that tag. Like me, she too is trying to redefine herself. She wants to transcend her reputation as being 'just her Uncle's niece'. Can she do it? Who knows. If Rising Sun Revolution was anything to go by then she's well on her way. But now she's up against me, a veteran of the ring, a bohemian of the mat. She grew up around the business, but I've been doing this longer than she's been alive. Most of the youth that come into this industry are soiling its reputation. It's up to people like me to preserve it. I wouldn't tar them all with the same brush, some of them are talented, some of them are breath of fresh air, a beacon of hope in an otherwise dull landscape. They talk a lot but say very little, more concerned with their image and fame than anything else. In the WWA I went up against, and beat, Redefine's Carmen Cambridge. She was naive enough to think that her age, her limited abilities and experience would out-do me in the ring. I only hope Sophia Wilson doesn't fall into that same trap. This indsutry is like a waterfall, endlessly churning out individuals. If you threw a pebble into that waterfall it may sink and disappear into the ether, like most of these young hopefuls. But every now and again one will emerge above the rest and carry on upstream. Who knows what Sophia Wilson will be. Hopefully the latter. I hope she proves me wrong about the next generation. I hope she restores my faith in the future of this business. What I saw at Rising Sun Revolution was nothing short of greatness. When I beat her I what to come away optimistic, I want to come away having sweated and doubted myself. Not everyone can do that to me, but she might. The redefining phase of my career starts this weekend. I'm transcending my legacy and my reputation. Sophia Wilson may go on to do the same, but for now she'll have to settle for a supporting role.

Jeremy: Oh Jeez…
Jeremy hurriedly slammed his laptop lid down. Phillips had uttered, or typed at least, the three magic words that frequently made his life and role as Sophia’s trainer a misery.
“Jon Kellar’s niece”
Already he could hear Sophia’s footsteps heading towards him.
What a shame, she’d been in such a good mood recently too…
The door flew open, and there was Sophia.
Sophia: You saw the blog post I take it?
Jeremy: Saw what? No… I didn’t…
Sophia: Jeremy…
Jeremy: Okay okay… I saw it.
Sophia: “What I saw at Rising Sun Revolution was nothing short of greatness”
Internally, Jeremy breathed a sigh of relief.
Jeremy: Oh… I thought you meant him mentioning Jon…
Sophia smiled.
Sophia: That explains why you’re whiter than an Irishman’s tan lines…
Jeremy: You’re… okay…
Sophia: Yeah… actually I am… because at Rising Sun Revolution I proved I belong here. I beat two fantastic athletes, and I earned their respect. Plus… he’s right. I mean, I ran away to another state to escape the “Kellar” tag but look how well that worked out, I ended up sharing a card with him!
Jeremy: Yeah, I saw your little reunion at the end of that match.
Sophia: Plus Sasha’s one of his students and now she’s the champion. She’s not letting his shadow swallow her, so why should I?
Jeremy: Wow… it’s nice to see you so positive, and calm…
Sophia: Oh for f**ks sake Jeremy, enough with the sap. I’ve got a match to win.
Jeremy: And we’re back…
Sophia: I may have reminded the world who I am, but thanks to this damn shoulder I’ve fallen behind the chasing pack. Now Sasha’s the World Champion and what am I doing? Some non-title affair against an old man desperately fighting to avoid being forgotten… at my expense.
I’m not some snot nosed kid… or a pebble… or a stepping stone. He thinks that I’ll be his resurrection, proof that the old man can still cut it in a young woman’s game.
Sophia smiled.
Sophia: There’s two sides to that Jeremy… you see them don’t you.
Jeremy: Er…
Sophia: Oh come on Jeremy… read it…
Sophia opened up the laptop, and pointed to the end of the penultimate paragraph. Jeremy read.
Jeremy: (reading) “But I'm at a point in my career where it's now or never. I need that one last run in the big leagues.”
Jeremy looked up.
Sophia: It’s the cry of the old lion… the one who can see the younger, stronger lion coming over that hill, his teeth bared, his roar loud, his tail up... a challenge. He’s desperate to hang on but he knows that maybe… just maybe… this is the one… this is the end.
Sophia looked into Jeremy’s eyes. Her trainer backed away slightly.
Sophia: And if he truly thinks I haven’t got it in me to end the old lion… then he’s in for a very big surprise.

CHASE THE SUN Come up on a brick wall, shrouded in darkness. A light flickers overhead as a figure stands upright resting against the structure in the shadows."In the social jungle of human existence, there is no feeling of being alive without a sense of identity." Journeyman Phillips steps out from the dark and into the light."I may not be king of this jungle right now, but the lion does not need the whole world to fear him, only those nearest where he roams. "Sophia, to the untrained eye this match may not hold a great deal of significance. But you and I know different. There's a lot at stake. For you it's about getting your career back on track, dusting off the cobwebs from your spell sidelines, and forging the chains of your career whilst breaking the shackles of your family name. And me, it's about finishing my career with my star firmly in the sky. "I've tasted success and failure in equal measures on my journey to this point. And now we've both reach the door simultaneously, yet we've come down separate paths. But only one of us can walk through. Next week this ship sets sail for the UK, the place where you and I both are from. One of us will walk into that Metro Radio Arena off the back of a big win. I'm not going to be left behind. I may never get this opportunity again, a chance to shine in front of our own fans. I've been up and down the roads to every outpost of the world for over thirty years, but I've never wrestled in front of the Great British fans on a stage as illustrious as this one. I want my star to shine bright in Newcastle, in Glasgow, Blackpool, Nottingham and Manchester. You need to spend time crawling through the shadows before you can truly appreciate what it is to stand in the sun. And the brightest flame casts the darkest shadow. "This isn't personal, this is just circumstance. Survival of the fittest. It all comes down to who wants it more, who wants to crawl out of the darkness and see the light of day. This isn't about my name disappearing into the ether, this is about my pride, and my legacy. Personal fulfilment. If you live long enough in this business, you make mistakes, you have ups and downs, highs and lows. Twenty years ago I was a bigger star than I am now. But the past has no power over the present. The important thing is how you learn from those experiences, how you handle adversity. There's a reason why I'm still here, forging my path, chasing the sun, because long ago I told myself to never quit. The sun may have risen last week in Chicago, but it's still very much in the sky. I'm facing it now and leaving my shadow to fall behind me, with you very much in it." Cut to black.

Sophia nodded her head to the beat as the bus sped along the road. The arena was only a few minutes away now, already she could feel the goosebumps.
As they came over the crest of a hill she saw it. She nudged Jeremy awake.
By “nudged” translating loosely as “punched really hard in the arm” Jeremy: OW!!!!
Sophia: There it is!!!
Jeremy rubbed his eyes and stared out of the window. Jeremy: So it is…
Sophia: You ever been to Indiana? I’ve never been to Indiana…
Jeremy: Are you… by any chance… really excited?
Sophia: That obvious?
Jeremy: Just don’t let it turn into overconfidence Silver… Phillips won’t be a pushover.
Sophia: I don’t expect him to be… but he shouldn’t expect that from me either. I’m flattered that he says he doesn’t, but he knows what’s at stake here. He wants to leave me in his shadow so that he can have the glorious homecoming… but I’m not going to let him.
Jeremy: How’s the arm?
Sophia sighed Sophia: It’s fine.. stop protecting me. I’m a big girl, I can manage…
Jeremy: I’m not…
Sophia: Jeremy… my arm is absolutely fine, will you stop getting your knickers in a twist… god!
Jeremy: Look, I just don’t want you to push yourself too hard.
Sophia: I see… I’m about to step into the ring with a veteran and you don’t want me to push myself too hard… god, you’re worse than Jon… always underestimating me. At least Phillips is giving me some credit.
Jeremy: It’s not about credit Silver, it’s about planning long term… you don’t want to fall off the wagon again.
Sophia: Phillips…
Jeremy: Phillips is a good example of someone who didn’t think big in the long run… and now look at him. Fighting against time to try and hit the top level.
Sophia: I guess… I kinda liked how he took my lion thing to heart, saying he’s not going to quit etc etc… and that’s good, I don’t want him to quit. I mean, it would have been cooler if I could have faced the big star of yesteryear and claimed that scalp, but if the old dog’s really still got some fight him then I can settle for that.
Jeremy: It’s not a done deal Silver…
Sophia: I know, I know… but can you blame me? I’ve got the chance to take off the head of a bona-fide ring veteran. The Silver Phoenix is going to keep on rising!
And then, as a bonus I get to go home and show everyone that I was right to do this, I was right… I was…
Sophia stopped as she saw the look on Jeremy’s face Jeremy: Is that what this excitement is really about? Going home with your head held high, rubbing it in your family’s face?
Sophia didn’t answer, but looked out of the window. Sophia: Hey, this is our stop!
