Fight or Run
“Intros and all That” You want to know what the best thing about being an indie wrestler is?
Well, there are a couple of things that I really enjoy. First off, you get to meet all types of people. You get to meet wrestlers with various skill sets, from all walks of life.
And then, you also have the chance to meet a bunch of fans. I don’t know about other wrestlers, but the fans are really important to me. Over in FGA, there was a point where I was really struggling. I went on a three or four match losing streak. I’ll be honest; I was bummed out. But you know who was there for me?
Those fans!
I had a chance to speak with a few of them. And most of them were very encouraging; they told me to just keep pushing.
That’s what I did.
And you know what? Eventually I did turn things around. At the time I was feuding with a guy named Jimmy Page. You all probably don’t know Mr. Page, so I’ll give you a short summary. Jimmy Page came into FGA with a vengeance. In a few short months, he had basically run through everyone in his path. He earned a Pride Championship match against the then holder, Johnny Karma. Johnny is good, but he was no match for Jimmy. After that, Jimmy went on to successfully hold that title for about five months.
For those who don’t know, FGA’s Pride title is probably the hardest to defend, because of the pure wrestling rules; the average Pride title reign is a little under two months. To put it in perspective, the FGA Heavyweight champion’s reign has normally been about one or two months longer than the Pride Championship.
Needless to say, Jimmy was the man. He wasn’t just dominant in the ring; he was ruthless. He took pride in murdering his opponents in the ring.
Jimmy and I had three encounters: one singles match, a six man elimination tag team match, and the last match for the Pride title.
He demolished me in that first match. I don’t have any excuses; he beat me fair and square. Now, in the tag match, the last two men were Jimmy and I. I had Jimmy on the ropes; he was on the verge of losing for the first time in months. So, he hit me with a low-blow; he had to cheat to win.
Like I said before, the last match was for the title. Needless to say, he and I beat the hell out of each other.
But in the end, I was the victor!
I became the Pride Champion! I’m currently holding it now.
Before that match I gave the best promo of my life. I called my shot; I told everyone that I was finally going to go out there and win. I dedicated the match to my girlfriend; and I dedicated the match to the fans. I told them that if I would the title, then they won the title. They supported me; and after the match, I did my best to return the favor.
Now, back to my original point, another thing that I love is being able to travel. I just started getting some buzz; so, I’m fairly certain not all of you know my story. My sister and I were orphans at birth; he didn’t have it easy. So growing up, we didn’t have the funds to travel around.
But ever since I got into wrestling, I’ve had a chance to see the world. Last year I had a chance to wrestle in Japan for a few matches. And this year I had the chance to go to the UK.
And state side? Well, I’ve gone just about everywhere.
…
You want to know what I hate about wrestling?
I hate introductions.
You know what I’m talking about. I’m talking about those long, drawn out promos. I’m talking about the guys who come out and say “I’m a 47-time world champion, and I’m here to win this one.” Or even worse—the “I’m bad and I’m going to kick everyone’s ass” guy.
I’m either of those guys. Heck, it wasn’t till recently that I even got on the mic.
I’m not a badass. I’m not a legend; and I’m not coming to take Second City Wrestling by storm, or burn it down.
No—I’m just a guy who loves to fight. I’m just a guy who loves to go out to the ring and compete with the best of the best.
That’s the kind of guy I am…
That’s who Riley Owens is.
And I hope my version of an introduction will be sufficient for you all.
“A Calm Before a Storm” “So, are you excited!?” asks Zoey.
Zoey is my girl. We have been dating for a good seven months now. Actually, my sister Tammy introduced me to her; they work at the same company.
Anyway, Zoey is the best. Ever since I became a wrestler, I had been hesitant about getting into relationships. I mean, everyone has heard the stories. You become a wrestler, you get into a fucked up relationship; all those stories end up with the wrestler either broke and in deep depression.
But Zoey and I…hmm, we are just different. Guess it’s because Zoey loves wrestling herself; so, she takes an interest in my work and my matches.
“Of course,” I say as I take a seat on the couch next to her. “But, I wish you her able to come as well.”
“I’d love nothing more to be in the crowd,” she says. “But, I’ve got to work on a big project that weekend.” Zoey puts her arms around me. “But, I know you will do well out there.”
“Yeah, I hope so. Mr. Fairchild is a former FGA Heavyweight Champion; this is going to be a big test for me.”
“So were Dan Herrera, Sean Sands, and Jimmy Page,” she said with a laugh. “I’m sure you will do just fine as long as you go out there and do your best.”
“Yeah, you are right.”
Zoey sighs.
“I’m actually kind of surprised that you decided to take on this booking though. I mean, it will be a good match, and a great experience for you. But, you’ve just got so much going on right now. Not only are you the FGA Pride Champion, but you’ll also in the tag team tournament there. And then there is the Phoenix Wrestling Tournament.”
“Yeah, it is a lot,” I say. I let out a small laugh. “But, that’s the life of and indie wrestler dear.
“It’s kind of crazy when you think about it. When you first break into the business, things are really hard. People don’t want to hire you and book you because you are green and inexperienced. But, the only way for you to get better is to have matches. So, you have to beg and plead to get put on the card. Eventually, people see that you have something; they look past what they see now, and they try to look at what you could become.
“Then one day, it clicks in everyone’s mind; they realize that you’ve got talent. Other wrestlers start talking about you, the fans start talking about you. The next thing you know, you’ve got too much work, too many matches coming up.”
“Hmm,” says Zoey. “That’s interesting. I guess you could say that all these opportunities are the fruits of your labor huh?”
“Indeed.”
“I just want you to be safe,” Zoey says as she rubs her fingers through my hair. “You’ve had a lot of battles, a lot of wars the past couple of months. Most wrestlers would have rested or taken a couple of steps back to regroup.
“But you did the opposite; you jumped right back into the fray.
“You’ve been pushing really hard lately. I know that’s you; I know that’s your personality. I don’t want you to pass down opportunities or anything. I just don’t want you to get hurt or anything Riley.
“So, try not to do anything crazy in this match ok?”
After all that, we switched the conversation and talked about something else. It would be important to talk about, so I’m going to leave it out. But, Zoey’s concerns kind of has me thinking. Two weeks ago I had a talk with my mentor. Or, my wrestling mentor is should say. Just like Zoey, he had similar concerns about me pushing myself a bit too hard.
And to be honest, both of them are right. I feel fine; I feel better than ever. But feelings are reality. The reality is I’ve had a lot of matches lately; the reality is I haven’t had a great deal of time to rest.
But, ever since I was made aware of Second City Wrestling, I knew I wanted to work a match there.
And what do you know, an opportunity presented itself.
So, I’ve got to keep pushing.
“The Fall from Grace” (On Camera) Frontier Grappling Arts…
I owe that place a lot. Late last year I was in contract terms with Insurgency Wrestling. They were offering the biggest contract of my life: I’d be featured on national TV every week, I’d face some of the best wrestlers in the world, and I‘d make a reasonable amount of money.
I was on Cloud Nine…
Until it all came crashing down!
A lot of time people squander their opportunities, especially in wrestling. The company will get behind them, and then they will get caught with a DUI; the fans will believe in the wrestler, and then he goes and does something stupid.
That didn’t happen in this case.
In this case, Insurgency’s doctor didn’t clear me to wrestle for the company. According to his testing, I had some elevated enzyme levels. We re-did the tests, but the results were still the same. So instead of offering me a job, I watched as my dreams were ripped up in front of me.
I was crushed…
For a couple of days anyway.
Afterwards, I picked myself up and continued to work. I’ve been wrestling for four years; all of my time was spent on the indies. So, when Insurgency didn’t hire me, I made some calls and got some bookings.
Back to Business as usual!
What I didn’t know is my sister had sent my tapes over to FGA; the company was impressed with me. I went to the doctors, and this time I got a clean bill of health. In fact, they said that I was one of the healthiest people that had walked into the office in a while.
Imagine that…
Long story short, here I am. Whether people like it or not, I am now standing near the top of FGA. I started from the bottom. I didn’t complain and I didn’t fuss; I just went out there and wrestled. In few months, I had racked up quite a few wins; I “upset” quite a few major stars. My stock kept rising until I was on a collision course with Jimmy Page, the Pride Champion.
I defeated him.
Now, I said of that to say this; FGA has been good to me. The company gave me a chance when they probably shouldn’t have. FGA took a risk when they signed me; a calculated one, but a risk nonetheless. So for that risk has paid off for both sides. Not only have I become a champion, but my name and value have risen. Because of FGA, I was able to compete for Sh!taki Wrestling over in Japan; because of FGA I was able to compete in APW’s final Survive and Conquer event.
If it wasn’t for FGA, I probably wouldn’t be here in Second City Wrestling either.
…
AJ Fairchild, you know a little something about FGA don’t you? Don’t think because I’m a bit younger that I don’t know your name. You were the third FGA Heavyweight Champion. You held the title for a bit over four months, if my math is correct. Now, I’m not going to sit here and lie to you; I haven’t seen many of your matches. I’m not going to sit here and suck up to you, like some others would.
But, I know this much; if you won that belt, then you are one Hell of a wrestler.
Or, should I say “were.” Maybe that is more correct. You’ve got to remember, that title reign was in late 2012; and since then, there hasn’t been a lot of buzz going around about you. People don’t seem to talk about you very much sir.
I fact, I had thought you retired. I didn’t even know you still wrestled until I saw your name on Second City’s website. Forgive me, but when I saw your name I laughed a bit. You were a grand champion in one the world’s top indie federations, and now you are losing to people in a rising upstart company.
Oh, what a fall from Grace.
“Falling off is a sickness; I heard that it's quite contagious.”
Hmm, let me ask you something AJ; why exactly are you here in Second City? And please, don’t give me the standard “I love wrestling” answer. What is the real reason why you decided to align with Second City?
I know why I’m here sir. I took one look at the roster, saw the talent, and knew it was place where I could have some awesome matches. I’ve been following Adam Stryker and John Pariah for a while now; they are two people that I’d love to face. So in short, I’m here to compete in a few matches, and hopefully have a dream match or two.
Plus Second City seems like it’s a great company; I want nothing more than to see it thrive and grow.
But why are you here AJ?
Did you join Second City because you thought it would be easier for you? You are young in age, but in wrestling experience, you may be one of the oldest here. A lot of the roster is young here is young and new to wrestling. Did you think you’d just come in here and run roughshod? Or, perhaps you just wanted to taste gold again. There were only were only six or seven people on the roster when you joined. Perhaps you thought you would be in contention for the title right away.
Or, are you just here because you have nowhere else to go? I don’t know what happened to you in FGA. But, it doesn’t seem like you’ve been there in ages. Are you damaged goods AJ? Was this your last option AJ? If Second City was your last option then that’s cool, just be honest about it.
…
You know, a few days ago you decided to Tweet me. If I’m not mistaken, your exact words were “This won’t be fun.” Now, I must beg to differ sir. You see, I LOVE wrestling; the more I wrestle the more I believe it was what I was born to do. I can’t describe the feelings that come over me when in step into that ring. Every match is fun to me sir. Hmm—perhaps that Tweet was in reference to yourself.
I mean, it’s no question that you had a rough time here in Second City. Your first match was against Johnny Ajax. You never really got into a groove in that match; and one 630 later, you suffered your first loss here.
Your second match was against Christian Rhodes, and to be completely honest, it was even worse than your first. You went out there and proceeded to get whooped on for about three minutes. A neck breaker from Rhodes, and that was all she wrote.
So yes, I could see why our upcoming match may not be fun for you AJ.
Maybe you just don’t love the Business like you used to AJ. Ha, maybe that’s the answer; that would explain just about everything that has been going on with you lately.
Maybe you have just lost your Passion.
Hmm, that’s a dangerous situation to be in, especially taking on a wrestler like me. Now, I’m not trying to be arrogant for anything; but, I’ve been wrestling for four years. I’ve trained liked crazy to get to where I am; I’ve put in all the necessarily work; no, I’ve gone above and beyond! I’m good AJ; I’m damn good! But more importantly, I LOVE this Business!
I love this Business AJ; that’s why I do all of this. That is why I do matches at Inferno, PWP, and here, even though I’m mainly employed by FGA. I love this Business; and I relish the opportunity to step into the ring!
…
I had one main goal when I made the decision to get into Professional Wrestling. That goal was to become the best; I think that should be everyone’s goal. I wanted to be the best; and I knew that I’d have to work extremely hard to become the best. I knew it meant endless hours of training. And I knew that it meant that I’d have to kick my butt kicked a lot, at least in the beginning. So, I trained hard! And I got my butt kicked; and each time I did, I took away another lesson.
Eventually, I became a good wrestler.
But you know what, “good” just isn’t enough for me!
AJ, when that bell rings, a war is going to break out. I don’t believe in have bad matches, or terrible three minute matches. You and I, we are going to have a showcase. But, at the end of the match, my hand is going to be raised in victory. I’m going to win this match AJ!
And when I do, I’ll be one step closer to become known as the Best Wrestler in the World!
